I feel that your manager’s approach is a great idea. There are times though when some leaders (especially senior management so to speak) cannot do this because of the sheer volume of employees. Now, in those cases many senior leaders have what is known as a “brain trust” where the middle managers feed forward information to the leader. This can be a great opportunity as long as the managers are very good at moving information upward and in the best interests of the employees. This is also referenced as a hybrid structure where the leader has the managers from each department/division provide information to her/him.
