observation paper

  1. After a review of social, emotional, and behavioral development in the course readings, this assignment allows you to apply that knowledge and see it reflected in the real-world.
  2. After taking a course like this you may feel yourself viewing children/adolescents through a different lens without thinking about it. For example, you may start “diagnosing” children you experience in the grocery store or teens you see in movies or even in your own family. This assignment reminds us of the difference between being an observer and an intervener, asking that you wear both hats, one after the other.
  3. After an introduction to engagement methods in the course readings, this assignment allows you to start thinking of ways to individualize rapport building.

Each student will observe a (non-clinical) child or adolescent in a context (with parents or caregivers, or with peers or in a social setting) for 30 minutes. Choose a child/adolescent of a similar age to the population you currently work with in your field placement, or are interested in. After your observation write a 3-5 page paper (not including cover page or reference page) that addresses the following:

  1. An introduction that provides the context of the observation and the relationship between you and the child/adolescent (if any).
  2. How did the child/adolescent relate to others, play, express feelings, makes sense of what was happening, and/or finds ways to act according to social expectations (and possibly, not as expected)?
  3. Note what seemed typical about this child/adolescent’s age-functioning, and any characteristics that you think make this child unique or distressed. Reference course readings or other resources to support your findings.
  4. Describe your experience as an observer (vs. an intervener) and what you learned from your own reflections.
  5. Last, briefly describe methods you would use to engage this child/adolescent during your first session if they were to become a client.
