The great wall of China was built in the third century BC. It is 4,100 miles long and 25 feet high. The wall was built on the northern frontier of China in order to form a barrier to protect the country from Mongol barbarians. This is one of the worlds largest military structures built. “The Great Wall begins in the east at Shanhaiguan in Hebei province and ends at Jiayuguan in Gansu province to the west. Its main body consists of walls, horse tracks, watch towers, and shelters on the wall, and includes fortresses and passes along the Wall.” (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/438)

There were several stages of building. There was the Great Wall of Ming. This undertaking was done with a vision of perfection and becoming a masterpiece. Work was done by human hands. Then there was the Chunqiu stage, which had more organization of space built in to the wall. The great wall in the Gansu province is admirable by the masonry work done. The Great wall as a whole has a significant history with the Chinese. (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/438)

Since we just finished talking about the Romans, I find it easy to Segway in to the final piece of this discussion, Hadrian’s wall, which was in the North West frontier of the Roman Empire had similar symbolic and defensive importance. This wall was much smaller, 73miles. There were towers and observation points similar to the Great Wall of China. Hadrains wall was built to keep out nomadic tribes.

Now for Modern walls, The Berlin Wall comes to mind. This was a wall built in Germany to divide the east and west during the Cold War. This wall was 87 miles long and 3 meters high, Much Much smaller and not as tall as the Great Wall of China. “The wall embodied the separation of East and West Berlin. Travel between the two sides became virtually impossible, except for diplomats and officials who went through designated checkpoints – the most famous of which was Checkpoint Charlie.” (http://www.newhistorian.com/trumps-wall-vs-great-wall-china-hadrians-wall-berlin-wall/7944/). This wall was taken down in 1989
