Why does the wealthier segment of a population sometimes play the role of willing guinea pigs, as concerns the introduction new technologies?

The student respond is

The wealthier segment of the population plays the role of the guinea pig because when biomedical enhancements first emerge they are accordingly expensive and only accessible to those who can afford it- being the wealthy. Since they will be the only part of society that has access to these technologies they will be the only people who the technology will be tested on and tried to see of they have any side effects or if they execute their desired outcome at all. Seeing as though they pay for the service, it is concerning that they will be the first people to see if the technology works or not but it is also beneficial for lower economic status citizens who will not be able to afford the technology until it is well developed and on price decline.
