William Maples’s Dead Men Do Tell Tales (1995)
William Maples was one of America’s greatest forensic anthropologists
and used tool marks to help solve grisly murders. In the book Dead Men
Do Tell Tales, Dr. Maples describes a case involving the discovery of a
headless body. Bite marks on the remains of the body were identified as
those belonging to sharks. Maples determined from fine saw marks on the
victim’s neck vertebra that the head had been sawed off before the
sharks had attacked the body. From the pattern made on the bone, Maples
was able to identify a hacksaw as the tool used to separate the head
from the body.
