1.) One of the goals of psychology is to describe behavior. For this activity, the description of the behavior is the chicken crossing the road. Next, psychology attempts to explain the behavior. Different schools of thought explain the behavior from a different angle. The behavior is the same (crossing the road), but the explanation for doing so is different.

Completing this assignment will allow you to demonstrate that you are able to:

• Identify psychological schools of thought, and their basic premises
• Describe two of the goals of psychology (describe, explain, predict, manipulate)
• Organize and accurately present material, and
• Apply APA formatting within the text and for end-of-text references, when appropriate.

Instructions:

• For each school of thought below:
  • Give a brief description, in your own words, of the theory
  • Detail the key points associated with the theory
• Use the following questions as a guide, providing complete answers:
  • According to the theory, what led the chicken across the road?
  • According to the theory, what motivated the chicken?
  • According to the theory, what did the chicken get out of crossing the road?
• Each theory listed below is unique. Be sure to include information about why the chicken crossed the road that would be addressed by that particular theory.

By completing this assignment, you will demonstrate that you are able to:

• Describe how experiments are used
  • Distinguish between independent and dependent variables
  • Distinguish between a control group and experimental group
• Organize and accurately present material, and
• Apply APA formatting within the text and for end-of-text references, when appropriate

Instructions:

1. Design an experiment to test the hypothesis that nicotine impairs driving ability.
   • In describing your design and how you will test this, please make sure to include the following:
     • Identify and operationally define your independent and dependent variables
     • How will you divide your participants into groups? Why would you do it this way?
     • Identify possible extraneous variables and discuss how you will control them.

In your initial posting, answer the following questions:

• Provide your own unique example of a correlation. This could be from your own life, from the news, or from movies/books/television. Do not submit one found in the textbook. Make sure this is a correlation and not a cause and effect relationship. For example, “I eat more and weigh more,” is a positive correlation but very likely cause and effect. Submit a correlation that is not simply obvious cause and effect.
• Is the correlation you’ve provided a zero correlation, a positive correlation, or a negative correlation? How do you know?
• How strong do you believe the correlation is between your two variables? What correlation coefficient do you think would be associated with this correlation?
• What makes you think this is a correlation and not a cause and effect relationship? Explain.
