Meaning and Significance

Write a paper (500-750 words) that explains how the application of a biblical text must arise from, and be consistent with, the biblical author’s statements and intentions.

  1. Use the passage of Scripture covered in the “Full Exegesis of a Passage” assignment in Topic 8.
  2. Summarize the meaning and function of the text for the original readers (what Paul said, what he meant, how they were to apply it).
  3. Discuss the transferable significance. What comparable life situations? What comparable faith commitments? What comparable applications?

Use 2-5 scholarly sources.

The written assignment for Lecture 8 is to write a full exegesis of Philippians 4:21-23. The step-by-step guidelines for doing the exegesis are given in this lecture. Follow them carefully and fully. The student will notice that these steps are simply a brief summary of the sections in Lectures 3-6. Refer to these lectures to get clearer insight to the steps below. Notice that two steps have been added below (#6 and 8), which are summary exercises to help the student review and prepare for the subsequent steps. An example of a full exegesis has been provided as a resource.

In an exegetical paper, the student may find that as he or she moves through the steps, the need to go back to a previous step to clarify an idea arises. This occurs when a point has become clearer as he or she has moved through the exegesis. This is the way it should work. Feel free to do that. Interpretation is very much a back and forth or spiral movement. One special note, Philippians 4:21-23 may seem like a dry passage with little significance, but it is full of important social and theological themes and actions that are very significant. Find the joy that is there. The remainder of the lecture will assist the student by affording a diagrammed representation of an exegesis, similar to the various rungs of a ladder to go up and down, to aid in understanding the larger context and smaller components of the process.
