Write a 150 word response on one of the following questions: Why do you think this play was seen as controversial by the church? There is a caveat to this question: your answer should go beyond the too-obvious point that Tartuffe is shown as a religious hypocrite. The problems the church had with this play go way beyond the fact that Tartuffe is a religious imposter. What is it about this play that the Church found so offensive? OR According to the biography on Moliere, after Tartuffe was banned the first time, he re-wrote some parts of it to try and placate the concerns that he is mocking religion or religious beliefs. Explain some instance within the play where we might suspect that this type of editing or adding could have taken place.
