Description:
As we have been learning in our discussions, the telos (end result) of the traditional bildungsroman is the acceptance of a community’s beliefs and values as one’s own. Franco Moretti suggests that One must internalize them [the social norms] and fuse external compulsion and internal impulses into a new unity until the former is no longer distinguishable from the latter. This fusion is what we usually call ‘consent’ or ‘legitimation.’” (Franco Moretti, The Way of the World, 16) Looking at The Kite Runner, examine to what extent Amir “internalizes” and understands “the social norms as” his own. Is he successful at socialization? What are the “social norms” that he adopts? Whose norms are they? How does your understanding of his socialization process shape how you read his coming-of-age process? Is this work presenting an alternative to the traditional socialization model, one that does not rely on nation belonging as the key shaper of identity? Remember in this discussion post that in addition to identifying what norms are adopted you must also explore how that shapes your reading of the novel and the work it is doing in relationship to the bildungsroman genre.
