The period leading up to the Civil War was a period of great political compromise. Many saw this as good and something which could prevent conflict as late as March of 1861. However. Lincoln argued during his run for the Senate seat from Illinois and for President that compromise was a big part of making the problem worse. In fact, between December 1860 and February 1861 when the first seven Southern states seceded, so many compromise proposals were sent to Congress, that a special commission was set up to review them all. Lincoln called a halt to this, stating he would support none of the compromises.
Was Lincoln a war hawk? Do you believe he was correct or incorrect on his view of compromise? What does this say about political compromise to this day?
