Description:

I am need of a response to this discussion post: Post trauma stress disorder (PTSD) is a disorder most people in society deal with on a daily basis. This disorder is common because it originates from a trauma incident that occurs in our lives and resurfaces when there is a trigger. For example, American Psychiatric Association, (2013) explains, an individual is exposed to a stressful event that creates anhedonia, dysphoric, angry, aggressive, and dissociative symptoms. The diagnostic for posttraumatic stress disorder includes “Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Recurrent, involuntary, and intrusive distressing memories of the traumatic. Presence of one or more intrusion symptoms. Persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the traumatic event. Negative alterations in cognitions and mood associated. Marked alterations in arousal and reactivity associated with the traumatic event(s) (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). William Thompson is the son of Henry and Rosita Thompson; he is suffering from alcohol abuse and PTSD problems. William and his wife were homeless and had to move in with his brother Henry when he lost his job as a lawyer (Laureate Education (Producer), 2012a). William’s behavior in the interview is similar to what is described from the diagnostic criteria. William was a captain in the Iraq were and is now a veteran. We can see the PTSD affecting his life. Diagnostic criteria such as recurrent traumatic memories from the being in Iraq, memories of violence, and anhedonia (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The therapeutic approaches I might use are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). As evidence shows these therapies are shown to be effective in treating PTSD (Wheeler, 2014). Treatment The medication treatment I would choose for this patient would be antidepressants. Antidepressants are proven to be effective in treating patients with PTSD. Patients with PTSD suffer from depression and antidepressants can greatly help with the depression. As Puetz, Youngstedt, and Herring, (2015) explains, antidepressants showed a 95% reduction in depression and anxiety with patient’s who are suffering from PTSD. SSRI’s and Tricyclic antidepressants showed the most reduction in symptoms when compared to other medications. In another study, Vries, Roest, Burgerhof, and De Jonge, (2018) describes, antidepressant therapy shows a decrease in anxiety and depression on the Hamilton anxiety scale and generalized depression scale. Outcomes The expected outcome would be for the patient to manage the disorder and still be able to live a normal life. PTSD is a disorder that can live with the patient for the rest of their lives. The best outcome is to treat the symptoms that are hindering the patient from living a normal life. Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
